Bee Cave is a historically rich city, with its current existence dating back only to 1987. However, the idea of living away from the control of big city government has been a defining feature of the area for over 140 years. One of the first families to settle in the area was the Bohls family in the 1850s, seeking to raise their family in a location far from the influence of Austin’s growing population. The region was sparsely inhabited at the time, as Indians still roamed the land. Bee Cave’s name is derived from the colonies of Mexican honey bees living in the banks of Barton Creek and Little Barton Creek. Today, the city encompasses a two-square mile area, with 8,800 acres of extraterritorial jurisdiction. The city’s administration began in a nondescript portable building in 1987, and while humble, the city takes pride in its rich history and unique identity.
