Buda, the charming and close-knit community located just south of the state capital, is gaining popularity among individuals flocking to the fastest-growing city in the country, Austin. Dubbed as the “Outdoor Capital of Texas,” Buda offers visitors vast acres of parkland to retreat and immerse themselves in nature’s tranquility. But that’s not all. The Hill Country gem has exceptional shopping, dining, entertainment, and events that tourists can enjoy without traveling too far from Austin.
The town of Buda, formerly known as “Du Pre,” experienced a significant boost in growth with the arrival of the railroad, thanks to Mrs. Cornelia Trimble, who owned the land where the town was later platted in 1881. She planned for a rail depot, which brought about a post office, more businesses, and an influx of residents. Although Buda was renamed in 1887 because of an existing town named Du Pre, its current name has a heartwarming backstory that traces its origin to the Spanish word “viuda,” meaning “widow,” a nod to the two widows who worked as cooks in a local hotel.
